Conserve Energy
|
If you use a light for more than 2 hours per day then it's a good candidate for replacement with a compact fluorescent lamp. Fluorescent lamps last ten times longer than ordinary light bulbs, and the energy bill savings will more than pay for the extra cost of the lamps over their lifetime.
$1 BILLION EACH YEAR…that's what American's spend to run their TVs and VCRs when these products are switched off. Most people don't realize that TVs and VCRs often waste energy to power features like remote controls and channel memory even when they're not on! ENERGY STAR-labeled TVs and VCRs are available to reduce this electricity waste.
Proper insulation will reduce most (especially older) homes energy bills, but it must be PROPER insulation. Many homes are either not insulated properly or use outdated and ineffective material. For Colorado, make sure your ceiling insulation is at least R-38 and wall insulation is R-11.
Another great way to save energy and make your home more comfortable is use windows with low-E glass, wood or vinyl frames, and argon gas between the panes of glass. Here's a great website to help you find the best windows for your house. But if new windows are out of your budget range then buy cheap and easy to use shrink-to-fit plastic covers. All you need is a hair dryer and a plastic window cover kit found at any hardware
store.

- Set your thermostat to a temperature where you are comfortable with a sweater on. Lower your thermostat five (5) degrees while you sleep.
- Set water heater temperatures at 120 degrees. Install water-flow restrictors in showerheads and faucets.
- Check to see if your attic and basement (or crawl spaces) have enough insulation.
- Check your furnace filter often -- replace or clean it as needed, but at least once every two months during the heating season.
- A dirty furnace filter can drive up your home heating costs.
- Use caulking or weather stripping to seal air leaks around doors, windows and other openings, such as pipes or ducts.
- Use draperies, blinds, curtains, or shutters on all windows to slow the loss of heat through the glass. Open window coverings on sunny days to let in the sun's warmth. Close them at night or on cloudy days to keep the cold air out.
- Use kitchen, bath and other ventilating fans sparingly in cold weather. In just one hour, these fans can blow away a house- full of warm air.
- Make sure your furniture is placed next to inside walls instead of outside walls, and away from drafty windows. Avoid blocking heat registers and returns with furniture, draperies or carpet.
