Conserving Water - Every Drop Makes A Big Difference
Thanks to your conservation efforts and the weather, our water supplies are can remain at comfortable levels. Outside residential watering, which uses the most household water, is a good place to start, but there are many ways we can conserve inside the home.
Tip #1: Listen for dripping faucets and toilets that flush themselves. Fixing a leak can save 500 gallons each month.
Tip #2: Run your washing machine only when full and save up to 2,400 gallons each month.
Tip #3: Keep your shower to under five minutes. You'll save up to 1,000 gallons a month.
Tip #4: Install low-volume toilets. Or if your toilet was installed prior to 1980, place a toilet dam or bottle filled with water in your toilet tank to save about 480 gallons a month for a family of four.
Tip #5: Put food coloring in your toilet tank. If it seeps into the toilet bowl, you have a leak. It's easy to fix and you can save over 600 gallons a month.
Tip #6: Install a low-flow showerhead. They're easy to install and can save your family over 2,000 gallons a month.
Tip #7: Turn the water off while brushing your teeth and save four gallons a minute. That's 800 gallons a month for a family of four.
Tip #8: Make sure the toilet flapper doesn't stick open after flushing. Even a silent toilet leak can waste 900 gallons or more per month.
Tip #9: Turn off the water while you shave and save over 400 gallons a month.
Using these tips, a family of four can avoid wasting over 9,000 gallons of water a month! |
